Reading False Breaks During Quiet Sessions
A quiet Asian midday or a holiday-thinned book can push price through a well-known level with little commitment behind the move. Traders who chase the break often meet the reverse within the same hour.
Useful tells include thin volume relative to the prior session average, an absence of follow-through on the next candle, and a rapid return inside the prior range. None of these guarantee a false break — they argue for patience before committing size.
Workshop drills use historical quiet-session cases so participants can pause the tape, decide whether the break looks genuine, and write down the invalidation they would use if they waited for a retest instead.
The goal is not to catch every move. It is to avoid paying for the privilege of being first when the book is empty.
