Zones Versus Lines: Choosing How to Mark Structure
Horizontal lines suggest exact prices. Zones acknowledge that liquidity sits across a range of prints. Both can be correct — the mistake is using one tool for every situation.
Use a line when a round number or prior closing auction repeatedly attracts precise reactions. Use a zone when rejection wicks span a noticeable range, or when multiple adjacent sessions left a cluster of highs or lows.
In the Breakout & Retest Lab we practice converting a messy wick cluster into a shaded zone, then placing invalidation just beyond the far edge rather than through the middle. That single change often improves how traders define risk.
If your platform only allows lines, treat two parallel lines as a zone boundary and refuse to enter until price has interacted with the band, not merely tagged the midpoint.
